Why Benchmark?
Benchmark testing is the essential first step in designing training programmes for operations personnel. Results from benchmark tests can be used to:
- Evaluate current and future training needs
- Establish budgets for training and testing
- Develop cost-effective solutions for individual learners
emery-roberts establish training needs by assessing pilots and air traffic controllers using the Benchmark English Test for Aviation (BETA).
The benchmark test assesses language proficiency according to the ICAO Rating Scale and Holistic Descriptors and has been produced according to the recommendations of ICAO Document 9835 'Manual on the Implementation of Language Proficiency Requirements'.
Flexible benchmark testing programmes are delivered on-site according to client need.

English Language Proficiency Test
The Aviation English Language Proficiency Test (ELP) was designed by Aerosolutions in collaboration with the University of Antwerp.
The 40-minute listening and speaking test is computer-delivered to allow for easy and uniform administration and for maximum authenticity.
The listening section is computer adaptive and measures the examinee’s ability to understand English. This section consists of a number of traditional multiple-choice questions with four answer choices.
The speaking section assesses how effectively candidates can communicate in English and measures the examinee’s ability to respond to different aviation related situations and tasks. The speaking test is recorded and takes 30-40 minutes.
The candidates recorded samples are assessed by the Aerosolutions/emery-roberts rating team. Once the ELP Test is completed, candidates receive individual reports outlining their result on each of ICAO’s six proficiency criteria and obtain an overall score. Results will be produced within two weeks after the test.
